Day 37 - the journey to Shanghai (18 July)

So onto the Z-trains ("bullet trains"). They are fast, and far more comfortable than what we have been used to by any standards so far! Today we complete the first two legs of three on the journey to Shanghai - you may recall that this is the only option we found in the face of the busy Chinese holiday season. We have a train to (and overnight stay in) Zhengzhou changing at LuoYang LongMen (on the tickets it's in camel-case, Kunaal and Nigel!).

The train hit around 155mph today - double that of UK trains? You can see from the picture in the station, the environment provided to the people who travel in this way seems much nicer than that for other classes of train! We had a panic where Stu nipped out of the waiting area, and then wasn't let back in. It was only because I happened to turn around that I saw him waving frantically in the distance, realising that he needed his ticket from me to get back in! Me seeing him was timely as the train was ready for boarding by this stage!

The time was passed eating various forms of bread (including some tasteless "uncooked" variety!), playing chess, Stu learning Backgammon and ordering coffee (thatwas actually hot chocolate). Two "coffees" put us back double the price of our meal at the local restaurant the night before!

On arrival in Zhengzhou we had to find an Internet Cafe to see where our hotel was (and what it was called!), since I failed to write this in advance. The map directions were not great... 20 minutes of walking later, we found it two doors away from where we started! Within minutes of arriving at the hotel, we blew the fuse by plugging in the faulty fridge!

Zhengzhou does not offer much in the form of tourist sights, but it is lively and busy as can be seen in the picture... we ate at Mr Lees opposite. After our meal, a random guy asked for a picture with the foreigners - celebrities again!

Bad news on Tibet, the company I was talking to has a full Inbox, so my correspondence is not getting through to them. They can't seem to understand that no emails are getting through, and phone conversations are not being fruitful.
