WEEK 8 - arrival in Xining, and increased altitude (31 July)

A new phase of my trip... the increase in altitude and heading towards Tibet!

Another day to relax... having risen over 2000 metres above sea level and spent 24 hours sat on a train, I didn't want to overdo it and end up with Altitude Mountain Sickness later on in the trip - when I reach a dizzy 5000m. I also wanted to make the most of my overpriced hotel! Xining was so booked up, hostels had no space, and the cheapest hotel I could find that had any space was £74 a night. That's a lot by Chinese standards.

I had a noodly meal at "Aijsen Ramen" - it has been suggested I go to this chain at least once. A nice fiery Thai White Fish noodle soup was the highlight.

I also recieved my Tibet train ticket at the hotel... I am ready to go - over a week and a half later than expected. The extra time in China has the consquence that Nepal will now only be a transit country for me, and I will have to come back to it another time to enjoy it. My plan is to overland is still working though!

Indian trains could seem tricky. I am on a waiting list for tickets (the Indian train booking system is a different conversation altogether1)

Here is a picture of Xining at night.
