The next phase has begun - into Asia proper! Today the group and I jumped onto a 13 hour public bus journey to Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbataar. It was tiring, but we did see the transition in the countryside from the Russia we had left behind to "Ger" tents, camels and bronze Buddahs littered across the countryside.
The road quality deteriorated as we progressed, and it really felt like we were entering a developing country.

Border checks were excruciating - 7 passport checks and 2 hours in total, as well as two luggage scans! I was lucky to get through customs so smoothly, since my immigration card had not had the correct part taken by the authorities when I entered Belarus. Wrong paperwork usually means bad news in Russia!
The roads in suburban Ulaanbataar were pretty much dirty tracks worn in by the fact that many vehicles happen to pass a certain way - though slightly better in the centre. Once in the centre, we boarded our very cramped local bus to our hostel. The Lotus Hostel was excellent - a book not to be judged by its cover - more on that later!

We finished the evening with a meal at the "Moderne Nomads" where I tried horse meat for the first time... yum! I will save the sheep scalp for another night!
To the left is a random picture of an interesting combination of building, sky and colours that I saw.
