DAY 83 - A day in Alor Setar (3 September)

Cathy has been very unwell in the stomach department for a couple of days. We have decided to spend an extra night in Alor Setar to rest. This means that we have had the opportunity explore Alor Setar which is described by the guide book as "typically Malaysian". Smaller cities can be nicer since they are more likely have the identity of the nation. I feel that places like Kuala Lumpar and Penang are more likely to have been diluted by foreign and tourist influences. In Alor Setar, it really was a case of "spot the westerner".

Cathy and I went out to look at the main square, exploring the State Art Gallery for Kedah state (some nice works on local life there, though no real masterpieces - "Ibrahim" had some decent watercolours using some very firm thick strokes). We then went to the Muzium Di Raja - a palace with a wonderfully ornate interior. We were not allowed to take photos in either venue. The mosque was very beautiful too.

After this, I went searching for a late lunch. Alor Setar was a bustling city with street food and snack places. I found a nice place, though it only did two dishes! Chicken with rice, and chicken fried rice! I went for Chicken and rice. The chicken came in a tasty spicy gravy, and the rice came with a dollop of wasabi/horse radish type stuff to spice things up. There was also a strange coleslaw that I skipped!

Later that night, Cathy and I had some more street food. It was a really nice egg, chicken and onion omelette type cuboid fried in a crepe style casing. I have forgotten what it was called. Yum - though it may not look like it from the picture!!
