There are a number of trails around Tanah Rata to do your own hiking. We did one simple one (or so we thought) recommended by the Lonely Planet Guide. It was route 9A, but we didn't read the bit that said "up to Robinson Falls". We continued past this and found it to be a harder walk with trickier climbs and clambering along edges! I think I may also have led us off on the harder route 9! I ate some humble pie after saying "yeah, it'll be farily straight forward, and I'm sure it's sign posted". It turned out at times to be a very adventurous 2.5 hours hike through jungle undergrowth!
The pictures below are some of the sights we saw.. dense jungle and the Robinson Falls. There was lots of foilage to duck under, and lots of mossy clefts to explore - Cathy and I pictured in one.
Below is an example of some of the terrain we were up against.
After walking for a long time, we stumbled across a group of guys who were totally lost - they had not even seen the waterfall, which is on the route and quite big. Once we got into deep undergrowth and had been walking for a while, we shouted to a farmer to check we were going the right way... we were glad to find we were near the end. The views of civilisation, roads and farmland towards the end were most welcome!
Once in civilisation, we hailed a passing taxi, and headed the 9km back to Tanah Rata.
We then met up with the Dutch couple we had shared a taxi with the day before yesterday for supper and experimentation with local cuisine (we went to the same place that we had a tasty porridge breakfast this morning). I managed to pronounce the guy's name (with his help) which sounded a bit like Kervin but with a glottal sound on the "K". Mariah and "Kervin" were cool to hang out with, and we tried a local dessert shop after supper, where we tried fruit laden ice cream-flakes. Mine had some turkish-delight type pieces in it, while Cathy's had something that looked like frog spawn! It was tasty though, and it was accompanied with rose tea.
Tomorrow we head to Kuala Lumpur!
